St Mary's Bellringers

Recently some work has been done on the bells, mainly by members of the local band of ringers. The work was done in two stages. First the bearings were inspected, re-greased and some replaced. During this stage we had help from a firm of bellhangers (Hayward Mills Associates). Then the ropes and fittings on three of the bells were adjusted so that the ropes fall straighter, making them easier to ring.

The work done on the second bell was the most complex; this involved taking the bell out of the frame and making changes to the frame, wheel, pulleys and clock hammer. This picture shows the second bell out of the frame and resting by the eighth (biggest) bell.

Here work is being carried out in the second bell's pit.

This shows the second bell back in the frame and ready to ring.
