Dedication of St Mary's Church

This extract from the Cartulary of the Abbey of Cirencester provides documentary evidence for the dedication of the church in 1190.

LETTERS OF ATTESTATION OF W(ILLIAM) BISHOP OF HEREFORD WITH RESPECT TO THE CHAPEL AT CHERLETON (AD 1190)

Let those now living and those to come know that I W(illiam) by the Grace of God the humble minister of the Church of Hereford at the request of our venerable brother Richard, Abbot of Cirencester, he being present, have dedicated the Chapel of Cherleton which pertains to the mother Church of Cheltenham, without the objection of anyone, saving the right of the mother Church of Cheltenham; and moreover it was clearly expressed that there should be celebrations each week in the aforesaid Chapel on the Lord’s Day, and the second, and fourth, and sixth days of the week and besides this on festal days; which, that it may not in the course of time be doubted by anyone, we, by the present writing, and the affixing of our seal, attest and confirm
