Organist and Choirmaster
Following the retirement of our organist and choirmaster, we are looking to appoint a talented musician to lead music within the church and to prepare the choir for their part in leading the regular Sunday morning service at 10:00 and Choral Evensong at 18:30. The 10:00 service is followed by coffee and refreshments. This post is an essential role in helping all those involved in the worshipping life of our church to fulfil their God-given musical potential.
St Mary’s Church, Charlton Kings is situated at the heart of Charlton Kings, a beautiful village towards the eastern edge of Cheltenham. We are a warm and friendly church with a rich history of making music, which includes a four-part robed choir with a wide repertoire and a reputation for delivering high-quality music – both in our own church and during visits to cathedrals and other venues.
Our Sunday worship is rich and vibrant and has music at its core. There are a range of activities for all ages across the week, and we maintain an open-door policy for quiet prayer and contemplation throughout the day. You will play for the weekly 10:00 Sung Eucharist, weekly Evensong and other Christian festivals. This will involve a wide range of both contemporary and traditional hymns, sung service settings, responsorial psalms and anthems. There is the potential to develop a music group to support all age services (once a month), so existing knowledge and experience of leading more contemporary worship styles will be welcomed.
Working with the Choir Committee, Vicar and Churchwardens, you will continue to develop and expand our choir, building on the excellent work of the retiring choirmaster. The choir currently rehearses every Friday evening, except for the school summer holidays.
This is a permanent post, which is subject to a probation period and will require full enhanced DBS clearance. The salary for this post is based on the RSCM musician’s contract; salary information can be found here and full details are available on request. The post includes 6 weeks’ paid leave p.a. and extra income is optional, with weddings and funerals. Starting date is negotiable, but it is envisaged that this post will commence before the end of current Covid restrictions.
